Penn Stuart / Commemorating 125 Years of Service

PennStuart is celebrating 125 years of legal service to the communities of Southwest Virginia, Northeastern Tennessee, Richmond, Virginia, and Eastern Kentucky. We would like to thank all of our clients for the opportunities to be involved in the growth of our area and the forging of strong relationships over the years. It has truly been an honor and a privilege!

Scroll down for a brief overview of our history.

Since the firm was founded in 1890, PennStuart has become the preeminent law firm in southwest Virginia and east Tennessee. Its reputation for high caliber lawyers and superior service rests upon a tradition of excellence established by the firm’s founders and the influence of the many distinguished attorneys associated with the firm throughout the years. The firm now consists of 38 attorneys in 4 offices in Virginia, Tennessee and Kentucky. Throughout the past one hundred twenty five years, PennStuart has developed robust associations with many leading businesses and industries in Virginia, Tennessee and Kentucky.

Listed among the firm’s clients during the early days were Norfolk & Western Railway, Farmers Exchange Bank, Aetna Insurance Company, Pet Milk and Clinchfield Coal Company. During these years, the firm built a reputation for successfully litigating difficult corporate issues. That reputation has resulted in PennStuart becoming the go-to firm in the region, especially in ‘bet the company’ high stakes cases. We understand our clients’ businesses and the challenges they face, and we are unwavering in our commitment to meet those needs. PennStuart’s legacy is a steadfast dedication to its clients. Our goal is to provide them excellent service, expertise and value – which has been our hallmark for 125 years.

Expanding our current practice areas is an integral part of the future of the firm. One example is our Outside General Counsel Group. Many smaller and medium sized businesses in our region have the same needs in their daily operations as do larger companies. Issues such as employment matters, risk management, contracts and commercial banking affect businesses of every size. Our group functions as a full-service legal team, which can serve a wider range of needs and do so in an economical manner. Other areas of practice expansion are family and domestic law, and elder law. These practices will provide assistance to families in our area as they work through transitions created by divorce, blended households, property settlements, illnesses and aging.

PennStuart is proud of its history and excited about its future. We thank all of our clients who have helped forge our legacy, and we look forward to many more years of continued relationships. Here’s to the future!
